How Do You Become a Driving Instructor in the UK?
To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in Great Britain, you must meet the eligibility requirements, apply to become an ADI and pass three qualifying tests: ADI Part 1 (theory), ADI Part 2 (driving ability) and ADI Part 3 (instructional ability). During your training, you may also choose to apply for a trainee driving instructor licence, subject to meeting the requirements.
STEP 1 — Check Your Eligibility & Start Your ADI Application
Before beginning the qualification process, check that you meet the requirements to become an ADI and complete the required application process, including the relevant criminal record check.
Theory Test
Part 1 tests your knowledge of driving theory, the Highway Code, instructional techniques and hazard perception.
Driving Ability Test
Part 2 assesses whether your own driving demonstrates the high standard expected of a professional driving instructor.
STEP 4 — Train & Gain Experience
Trainee Driving Instructor Licence – Optional
After passing Part 2 and completing the required training, eligible candidates may apply for a trainee driving instructor licence. This can allow you to gain practical experience teaching learners while preparing for Part 3, subject to DVSA requirements.
Instructional Ability Test
Part 3 assesses your ability to deliver effective, client-centred driving instruction while managing risk and helping a real pupil learn.
