How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need to Pass in Birmingham?

June 19, 20263 min read

Most learner drivers in Birmingham ask the same question before booking their first lesson — how many lessons will I actually need?

The honest answer is that it depends on you. But there are some clear facts that can help you plan.

The DVSA National Average

According to the DVSA, the average learner driver needs around 45 hours of professional driving lessons before passing their test. Most people also do around 22 hours of private practice on top of that with a friend or family member.

However this is just an average. Some pupils pass in 20 hours. Others need 60 or more. Neither is unusual.

What Affects How Many Lessons You Need?

Several things affect how quickly you progress:

Your starting experience — if you have driven on private land before or had some lessons in the past, you may need fewer hours.

How often you have lessons — pupils who have two or three lessons per week tend to progress faster than those who have one lesson a fortnight. Regular practice keeps your skills fresh.

Whether you do private practice — practising between lessons with a parent or friend in their car can significantly reduce the number of professional lessons you need.

Your natural confidence — some people take to driving quickly. Others need more time to build confidence, especially on busy roads or dual carriageways. Both are completely normal.

The type of lessons — automatic lessons are often easier to pick up quickly because you do not have to manage gears and clutch at the same time. Many pupils find they need fewer lessons in an automatic car.

Manual vs Automatic — Does It Make a Difference?

Yes. Automatic driving lessons are generally easier to get started with. You do not have to worry about stalling, gear changes or the clutch, which means you can focus entirely on road awareness and control.

At Aceway we offer both manual and automatic lessons across Birmingham and the West Midlands. If you are not sure which is right for you, we can advise you after your first lesson.

How to Reduce the Number of Lessons You Need

There are some practical things you can do to progress faster and save money:

Have lessons regularly — at least once a week, ideally twice.

Practice privately between lessons — even 30 minutes of practice with a family member makes a big difference.

Do your theory test early — knowing the Highway Code helps you understand what your instructor is asking you to do and why.

Focus on your weak areas — ask your instructor to spend extra time on the things you find hardest, such as roundabouts, parallel parking or motorway driving.
